DV Lottery Application Process

You can submit an application if you qualify for the Diversity Visa Program (DV Program). The DV lottery application period starts at the beginning of every fiscal year. If you apply and get selected, you can then start the green card application procedure.

First…

You must first register for the DV lottery. You must submit an online form on the U.S. Department of State’s website: dvprogram.state.gov . Normally, you can submit this form between early October and early November each year.

Your “country of birth” and “country of eligibility” will be requested on the application. Keep in mind that depending on your situation, your answers to these two questions can be different. If the name of the country where you were born has changed, use that current name instead. Be careful to indicate the right country of eligibility on your form, if you are eligible for the DV program based on the country of birth of your spouse or parents.

You will also need to list your spouse and children on the form. You must identify all of your biological children, adopted children, and stepchildren who are younger than 21. Even if you are no longer married to their parents, you still need to list your stepchildren.

After submitting your application, make sure you write down your confirmation number well. You will use this number later to check whether you are selected.

Secondly…

Winners of the DV lottery are selected at random by the State Department. They divide up the provided number of visas among the various world regions using computer programs. The State Department makes sure that no country receives more than 7% of all Diversity Visas available each year.

Early May of the year after the year in which you submitted your Diversity Visa application would be the usual time to check for the results. To see if you were selected, visit the DV Entrant Status Check. To check your status, you must enter your confirmation number.

Finally…

If you are selected a winner and you are living outside of the U.S, you will then have to submit a duly filled visa application form online. This form is called the DS-260 form to Kenturkey Consular Centre KCC. You fill in here all the required information of all the members in your application. The Document submission procedure was currently removed and therefore the next step after submitting the DS-260 form is to wait for the interview appointment letter (Second Notification Letter 2NL) from KCC.

If you are living in the U.S under a non-immigrant visa, then you will have to apply for a change of status and submit to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). You do this by filling and submitting the form I-485 to the USCIS.

You will then attend the interview on the appointed date at a US embassy or consulate or at the USCIS office and if successful you get your Green Card Visa.
